What is Daxxify and how it works
FDA has recently approved a new anti-wrinkle injectable known as Daxxify injection. This injectable could become a major rival to the industry leader Botox. Daxxify, like Botox, is an injectable treatment that can treat dynamic wrinkles on the face.
Daxxify shows a real chance of sweeping the facial injectables market, for patients who want exceptional anti-wrinkle results with only two treatments needed per year.
What is Daxxify?
Daxxify, also known as daxibotulinumtoxina-lanm or Daxi, was created by the Nashville-based company Revance Therapeutics Inc (Nasdaq: RVNC), and is part of a family of neuromodulators that use injections of a small amount of botulinum toxin to smooth wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
When neuromodulators are injected into your muscle (like on your forehead or in between your eyebrows), they block your facial muscles from receiving signals from your nerves. And when that communication is interrupted, your facial movements decrease, which helps to temporarily smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
This injectable is also the only neuromodulator that’s made without any animal or human byproducts, so if you’re into vegan beauty products, you might prefer Daxxify.
How is Daxxify different than Botox?
All neurotoxins need a stabilizer to help facilitate their journey into your muscles, and Botox and Dysport use proteins for that job. Daxxify, however, uses a peptide, making it the first of its kind. Not only is that peptide making this injectable last longer, but it also means that Daxxify is the first vegan neurotoxin on the market. Of course, we know that peptides are frequently used in our topical skincare to help hydrate, tighten, and firm the skin, so Daxxify’s origin story isn’t all that surprising.
The difference between Daxxify and Botox is that Daxxify works faster and for longer – most people will notice a major decrease in movement in two days, versus the usual 5-7 days. And while Botox and Dysport typically last three to four months, Daxxify lasts on average six months for patients. People are also finding that it kicks in more quickly, as well. In clinical trials, some patients even saw results that lasted up to nine months.
How does Daxxify work?
Daxxify is a neuromodulator that works to smooth dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form as a result of repeated muscle contraction in a given area. For example, facial expressions can result in dynamic wrinkles, including smiling, which can lead to smile lines around the mouth and crow’s feet on the edges of the eye, and frowning or furrowing the brow, which can lead to horizontal forehead lines or frown lines in between the eyebrows. When we are young, dynamic wrinkles only appear while we are making those facial expressions and then the lines smooth when the face is at rest. However, as we age, dynamic wrinkles become etched into the skin, forming wrinkles even when the face is at rest. These tell-tale signs of the natural aging process can be reversed with treatments available on the aesthetic market, such as Botox and now Daxxify.
Daxxify works via the injection of the neuromodulator daxibotulinumtoxina-lanm. When injected into the muscle responsible for dynamic wrinkles, this neuromodulator works to block the nerve signal that tells the muscle to contract. As a result, the muscle is no longer engaged, smoothing out wrinkles in the area and preventing new wrinkles from forming.

Does it have any side effects?
Clinical trials demonstrated that Daxxify does not have significant side effects or safety concerns. As with any injectable treatment, patients may experience redness, swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort at the injection site for up to seven days after treatment.
The candidates
Most men and women who want to eliminate the appearance of frown lines can benefit from Daxxify injections. Frown lines are also referred to as “11 lines” or glabellar lines – they are the vertical lines that form between the eyebrows. Like other neuromodulators, Daxxify is likely beneficial for off-label uses, especially dynamic wrinkles in other areas such as horizontal forehead lines or crow’s feet.
Is there a recovery period after this injection?
The recovery period after the treatments is minimal if any at all. You can return to work or your usual activities immediately after your injections. You may experience some redness or small red bumps in the treatment area for several hours after your treatment. However, these effects fade quickly. It’s important not to massage the area for one to two days and to avoid alcohol, heavy workouts, or extreme heat during this time.

Everyone who uses Daxxify will experience different results. In clinical studies, about 50% of people with moderate to severe frown lines who received these injections had mild frown lines or none at all 2 months later. For some people, results even lasted for 6 months or longer.
There isn’t enough information available to know if Daxxify is safe to use during pregnancy. In animal studies, high doses of the injectable caused harm to unborn babies and pregnant mothers.
